Master guitarist Joost Dijkema

Joost Dijkema.

A movie without music is literally a stupid movie. That is why I am extremely happy that my cousin Joost Dijkema, in my opinion the best guitarist in the Netherlands, wrote the music DRAWN.

The genesis.

After a five-day tour in December 2020 with Bhajan Bhoy, Kohhei Matsuda, Nora Mulder, Arvind Ganga and Mees Siderius, Joost Dijkema wanted to record something experimental. In his own Hunker Bunker Studio in Haren, he recorded a 25-minute piece, using instruments such as the pedal steel, banjo and a phaser pedal, a gift from his friend Peter van der Weij (also a talented pen artist). The composition was recorded, but subsequently fell into oblivion.

That was until I asked Joost to do music for my film DRAWN. At that time, he was mainly composing a tribute to the recently deceased Michael Chapman. Instead of composing a new piece, Joost sent me this 25-minute piece of music. I was speechless when I heard how perfectly it matched the drawings of DRAWN.

Another collaboration.

Joost always had the idea of using a drawing of mine for the artwork of his LPs. Although his Americana style and my abstract, statoscopic pen drawings often didn’t seem like the obvious combination, in 2019, for the album Time Thief, Joost decided to print my drawing on the inside of the LP. I’m very proud of that.
